Recently quality of scuba instruction has
been the hot topic with the staff at the shop. We have assisted a lot of
divers recently trained by other shops who are frustrated and struggling
to get comfortable with their skills to enjoy their new hobby. most are
over weighted with a really poor understanding of trim and buoyancy. We
even a a young lady wearing 25% of her body weight in lead because her
instructor told her that's what she needed. Scary realizing when
you consider the people training these folks knees in the mud and all
rely on these people to continue in the sport for their livelihood.
I had a customer call this morning to rent cylinders for a weekend of fun filled diving when I asked what he would like for a desired mix he said well what do you think. Another nitrox class gone very wrong. So maybe I'm off base here and maybe I'm cynical but maybe those of us passing on years of knowledge skill and talent should make it a point to charge what we are worth place value in the the abilities of ourselves and the facilities we represent and do what we are good at making divers real ones, who can figure their mixes swim over the reef not walk on it and leave their body weight in lead at home in the garage.
